Red Dead Redemption 3: Release Date Rumors and What We Know So Far

As they say, Red Dead Redemption 3 has large shoes to fill. As the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed video games in history, Rockstar Games has their work cut out for them. Fortunately for them, they are not under any time constraints.

There is currently no official release date for Red Dead Redemption 3, which should come as no surprise. Rockstar Games is well-known for taking their time on its flagship projects; it might be argued that their previous success has provided them this luxury more than any other gaming company.

However, the lack of an official announcement does not imply we have nothing to go on. Where there's smoke, there's fire, and where there's fire, there's usually a cowboy with some darn good treasure to take. Reading between the lines allows one to infer quite a bit.

With that in mind, we thought we'd cast our gaze to the horizon and see what we could find out about Red Dead Redemption 3. While we will try our best to be accurate, it is important to note that the bulk of this material is hypothetical rather than definite.

Release date for Red Dead Redemption 3

The first game in the Western-themed genre was released in May 2010, and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released in 2018. This implies that, if my calculations are accurate, Rockstar Games took almost 8 years to produce the expected sequel.

Between these two games, there was, of course, Grand Theft Auto 5, which was released in 2013. Based on historical performance, it seems like Rockstar Games releases a AAA product every 3-4 years, which means Red Dead Redemption 3 or GTA 6 might be released as early as 2023... unless, oh no. The game GTA Online.

While Rockstar used to concentrate only on large single-player games, they have subsequently dipped their toes into the lucrative multi-player online gaming market with GTA Online. They seem to like it. They also seem to like remastering classic games.

As a result, new Rockstar AAA games will be released at a greater interval than before. Then there's the tiny issue of GTA 6.

Essentially, I wouldn't anticipate Red Dead Redemption 3 until 2026 if GTA 6 is released in 2023, and much later if that game is delayed.

Characters

Given what Rockstar achieved with Red Dead Redemption 2, it wouldn't be shocking if they attempted to maintain a link with the characters and narrative of previous games. While we know what happened to John Marston and Arthur Morgan, there remains one major individual whose destiny is unknown: Jack Marston.

This would be a fascinating return to the environment we've become used to, while also allowing the devs to dig into a hitherto unexplored historical time of the Wild West.

Another option is to create a brand new Red Dead Redemption 3 character while using known characters from previous instalments. If the crew decides to take this route, it would be fantastic to have a female main character.

Women can be wonderful protagonists in Westerns, as seen by True Grit, and it would allow Rockstar to quiet critics who have accused them of sexism in the past (they've never had a selectable female character in any of their games).

Location

Some speculative essays have been produced that imply Red Dead Redemption 3 might be set, at least partly, in Europe. This would enable Rockstar to investigate the suffering of immigrants in the same manner that they did in Grand Theft Auto 4.

From a narrative standpoint, this notion has apparent value, but the burden involved with constructing a portion of Europe and then just moving the game to the United States may be characterised as self-defeating.

It's also worth contemplating if series fans, correctly or wrongly, desire to play as a European in a series that has always been dominated by Americans. Personally, I'd want to see that, but I doubt it will happen.

Like the original two games, Red Dead Redemption 3 will most likely take place in a fictionalised version of the United States. This creative choice enabled the creators to pick and select their favourite features of the Wild West mythology without being bound by history or geography. And I think they'll go down this road again.
